Rumiko Takahashi's "feudal fairy tale" InuYasha, after nearly 10 years, 193 episodes, and four theatrical features, has reached its conclusion. The ultimate battle between good and evil is at hand: on one side, the half-demon Naraku, who has reunited the enormously powerful shards of the magical Shikkon Jewel; and on the other, modern schoolgirl Kagome, the half-demon InuYasha, and their friends--warrior Sango and her brother Kohaku, monk Miroku, and Shippo the fox-demon. Even InuYasha's aloof half-brother Sesshoumaru joins Naraku's foes.
As the tale builds to the climactic battle, each character is tested and must prove worthy of the trust and love the others have bestowed. Kagome and InuYasha face the most dire perils, and their triumph reflects the strength of the bond they share. Director Yasunao Aoki utilizes all the special effects at his disposal as InuYasha and Sesshoumaru develop ever-more fantastic sword techniques, Kagome's magical arrows assume greater power, and Naraku's illusions grow more baroque.
After so many battles, spells, lovers' spats, adventures, comic misunderstandings, and journeys through time and space, it is difficult to bid farewell to these beloved characters. However, the conclusion is a satisfying one, both for Takahashi's characters and her audience. Unlike Dorothy Gale, Kagome discovers that while there's no place like home, some places--and times--are better.
The story arc follows the characters as they pursue Naraku, with Hitomiko's barrier and Magatsuhi's evil thoughts complicating the journey. Kohaku's fragment and the completion of the Shikon no Tama lead to the characters entering Naraku's body, where they face his enticement of darkness, lure of light, and transient wish. Throughout their quest, the characters must confront their unreachable feelings and look towards tomorrow.
The narrative is rated Teen, featuring violence, violence against women, grotesque imagery, and brief nudity. Director Yasunao Aoki's masterful use of special effects and the characters' emotional journeys culminate in a satisfying and poignant conclusion to this long-running "feudal fairy tale."
